The bitter orange (Citrus x aurantium), a hybrid of the grapefruit (Citrus maxima) and the mandarin (Citrus reticulata), has been cultivated in the Mediterranean region since the 10th century. Believed to have originated in the tropical Himalaya region of southern China, the evergreen plant was later brought to Italy. It is also known by other names, such as bitter orange, Seville orange, or sour orange, and belongs to the genus of citrus fruits (Citrus) and the diamond family (Rutaceae).

The seeds of the bitter orange should be sown about an inch deep in the ground and kept moist through repeated watering. To create a microclimate that ensures rapid germination, a lid or cling film can be used. In a warm place, the first seedlings can be seen after just a few weeks.

The white flowers of the bitter orange have a strong scent and are primarily formed between May and June. The fruits are ready for harvest after approximately eight months. If the climatic conditions are favorable for the heat-loving bitter orange, it can grow into a tree up to 32 feet in height.
